Helium Piano Solo Arrangement with Chords, Metronome & BPM

Pedagogically suited for Intermediate students (intermediate benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 4–6)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on coordinating independent dynamic levels between hands while maintaining steady metric propulsion. In sections with broken arpeggio figures and modern pulse chords, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: coordinate pedaling with chord changes to maintain acoustic warmth. Practice Recommendation: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct. Score pointer: Shape the right-hand melody with a sustained cantabile tone while keeping the left-hand broken-chord accompaniment soft and even. Use half-pedal changes through.

From Sia's catalog, Helium remains an essential contribution to the modern pop keyboard selections. Cast in B-flat Major (two flats (B♭, E♭)), the composition organizes its melodic arcs around B♭. Dynamic tension arises from modulatory motion toward the relative mode of G Minor, balanced by harmonic stabilization from E-flat Major. The chordal vocabulary centers upon stable tonic statements alternating with F Major pivots. Keyboardists will find that B-flat Major creates a rounded sonority offering ergonomic comfort for chordal blocks and cantabile accompaniment.

Operating within 4/4, this simple quadruple meter generates a well-proportioned metric pulse alternating primary and secondary stresses across the measure. The benchmark tempo of ♩ = 72 BPM (Moderato cantabile) conveys a poised with natural rhythmic breathing sensibility. During execution, listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.

When programming this selection, music educators frequently schedule Helium for informal recitals, private studio practice, and collaborative accompaniment. To accommodate diverse vocal registers, accompanists can transpose the B-flat Major score: baritones rest easily in A-flat Major, while lyric tenors and high soloists project effortlessly in C Major.
