Running on Empty Piano Solo Arrangement with Chords, Metronome & BPM

Graded at the Intermediate level (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), the score fosters disciplined keyboard ergonomics. The primary technical hurdle involves achieving fluid finger legato without relying on the damper pedal to mask uneven key releases. When negotiating flowing keyboard arpeggios that support emotional melodic peaks, ensure the singing melody stays dynamically elevated over the accompaniment. Acoustically, execute full pedal clears at dynamic changes to highlight intimate moments. Technical Drill: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct.

The foundational pitch center is G Major (a single sharp (F♯)). Here, G serves as the primary resting point, while modulations into E Minor and dominant tensions in D Major shape the emotional contour. Harmonically, the progression G → Am → F → Dm → G7 rests on a half-cadential dominant harmony that builds musical anticipation. For the performer, this layout is characterized by a sunny tonal landscape where the single raised pitch F♯ creates clear melodic direction toward the tonic.

From Jackson Browne's catalog, Running on Empty remains an essential contribution to the popular pop sheet music repertoire. Comprising 79 bars across a 4-page layout, the musical text stems from standard contemporary studio engravings. In 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), rhythmic continuity is shaped by a balanced metric groundwork providing grounded stability with primary weight on beat one and secondary stress on beat three. The reference performance speed is ♩ = 102 BPM (*Moderato*), yielding a balanced with steady metric poise tempo profile. From a phrasing standpoint, listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.
