Canon in C

Framed in E-flat Major, the score establishes E♭ through a key signature featuring three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭). Harmonic variety is enriched through dialogue with the relative minor/major (C Minor) alongside strong cadential support from B-flat Major. Harmonically, the progression E → flat → G → Am → F → Dm suspends tension over an active dominant chord awaiting tonal release. In terms of hand topography, E-flat Major yields a rich acoustic setting favored in classical literature for its heroic warmth and sonorous chord voicings.

Metric propulsion relies on 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), giving the piece an authoritative quadruple framework where downbeat accents anchor the overarching phrase architecture. Set to a metronome speed of ♩ = 103 BPM (*Tempo comodo*), the overall character feels composed with disciplined, graceful rhythm. Pianists should ensure that they listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.

Designed for Intermediate level pianists (transitional keyboard syllabus (ABRSM Grade 4 to Trinity Grade 5)), this piece demands clean articulation and hand balance. The chief hurdle entails coordinating independent dynamic levels between hands while maintaining steady metric propulsion. Balancing contemporary broken triad ostinatos and resonant pedal points requires distinct volume separation between parts. Furthermore, feather the pedal to sustain bass notes without drowning upper textures. Rehearsal Step: record your practice with emphasis on listening for crisp pedal releases on each harmonic pivot.
