Black Swan

Designed for Intermediate level pianists (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this piece demands clean articulation and hand balance. The chief hurdle entails achieving fluid finger legato without relying on the damper pedal to mask uneven key releases. Balancing flowing keyboard arpeggios that support emotional melodic peaks requires distinct volume separation between parts. Furthermore, feather the pedal to sustain bass notes without drowning upper textures. Rehearsal Step: play the melody forte while ghost-tapping the accompaniment keys silently beneath the surface. Score pointer: Focus on voicing the dark melodic material above the repeated accompaniment figures and keep inner voices balanced. Use half-pedal techniques during atmospheric.

Set within the harmonic domain of B Minor (two sharps (F♯, C♯, featuring A♯ leading tone)), the score secures tonal focus on B. Expressive depth is enhanced through secondary pivots into D Major and dominant reinforcement via F-sharp Major. Tonal construction prioritizes diatonic primary chords, balancing E Minor warmth against dominant F-sharp Major tension. Under the fingers, B Minor features an austere, intense key environment requiring firm fingertip traction on F♯, C♯, and the raised A♯.

Originating within the modern pop keyboard selections, Black Swan by BTS exemplifies structural economy and melodic clarity.
