The piece operates in E-flat Major, governed by a signature with three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭). This tonal center positions E♭ as the primary acoustic anchor, while C Minor and the dominant B-flat Major supply contrasting tonal colors. Harmonically, the musical line relies on fundamental triad relationships (A-flat Major and B-flat Major) around the tonic root. Keyboardists will find that E-flat Major creates a noble and expansive tonal landscape historically associated with solemn grandeur and expressive weight.

Pedagogically suited for Advanced students (advanced concert artist standard (ABRSM Diploma / ARCT syllabus)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on mastering nuanced rubato, synchronizing rapid arpeggiated passage work, and maintaining tonal polish under speed. In sections with cinematic rolling bass sweeps and sustained chord foundations, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: feather the pedal to sustain bass notes without drowning upper textures. Practice Focus: block intricate passage work into chord clusters to cement muscle memory before speeding up. Score pointer: Treat the accompaniment as a supportive theatrical ballad texture, keeping broken chords warm and even. Shape the vocal melody with generous rubato, careful bre.

The rhythmic foundation is anchored in 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), yielding a balanced metric groundwork providing grounded stability with primary weight on beat one and secondary stress on beat three. Paced at ♩ = 68 BPM (Andante), the tempo projects a flowing at a graceful walking pace musical mood. To refine rhythmic clarity, avoid pounding downbeats mechanically; keep the line buoyant through intermediate pulses.
